Eating Europe #5: La Cocina de San Antón by Cinco Jotas

Upon arriving in Madrid, I found myself reading a lot about the various markets the city had to offer. Our first morning, we ventured out to find Mercado de San Antón for some lunch. The market's three levels include mainly food to take away and cook at home, a food court-type area with some fresh meals, and a bar and a terrace on top for finer dining.

While some of the options on the lower floors were tempting (and I ended up getting a slice of Bailey's cheesecake at one of the stalls for later, which was delicious), I wanted to sit down with a full meal and relax before venturing out and exploring as much as we could see of Madrid in a day. We arrived right around noon and the terrace was lovely, but nearly empty. It slowly started to fill up a bit as we dined, perhaps because we were a bit early for a Spanish lunch?

Upon sitting down, we were given a plate of olives and each our own plate of bread. Assuming these were included in the meal, we chowed down, despite the fact that the bread was not that great (needed oil and vinegar...which was probably available on request, but we did not bother since it was only a couple pieces each). When we received the bill we saw they were an extra 4 charge or so. None of us were expecting that although I knew some fancy places charged for bread, it was the first time we encountered it on our trip. They were nice enough to take it off the bill when we asked about it though. Just a warning!

One of my friends ordered chicken curry and the other tomato soup, and they both found their dishes a bit underwhelming (and simply undersized) for the price. I personally really enjoyed my salmon salad meal and found it a decent deal for 12 - was not huge, but filling enough and tasted fresh and yummy. However, as happened one or two other times on my trip, when I ordered something with salmon I expected it to be baked or grilled and it ended up being smoked. It worked with this particular dish though and it helped that the amount of salmon was generous. It was accompanied by spinach and just the right amount of yogurt-dill dressing to give it a nice flavor and texture without drowning it.

I also got a nice glass of white wine to go with my meal (although as you can tell from the above picture, I finished it by the time my meal arrived)! I had a sip of my friend's rosé which was even better, just the right amount of sweetness and refreshing. Looking back it was a nice enough dining experience, but perhaps if we had taken more time to look around the other floors of the market we might have enjoyed eating their as well and may have been more satisfied for the price.
